2030 Vision: Enable faculty, staff, and students to work across traditional boundaries and prepare servant-leaders to shed new light on enduring and profound questions in our diverse community and globally connected world.

Inclusive Pedagogy

Faculty program directors, Student Affairs, and other staff meet regularly to discuss inclusive pedagogy and support for students in each of the School of Data Science degree programs. In addition, as part of the Inclusive Excellence Badge program, faculty will have the opportunity to participate in multiple training courses and workshops around increasing course accessibility and inclusion.

The School of Data Science was recently awarded a $9,600 Inclusive Excellence grant from UVA’s Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This funding will support a year-long project to co-design an undergraduate syllabus template, a GitHub repository, and a Data Science GitHub webpage for students minoring in data science. The project will serve as a pilot for future work to support data science graduate programs. Faculty will be heavily engaged to ensure that the tools produced are effective in reducing workload, enhancing the clarity and accessibility of courses, and building upon existing work the School has invested in through partnerships with the UVA Center for Teaching Excellence and Access Computing, among others.

Research and Scholarship

The Data Justice Academy is an immersive residential experience for undergraduate students from groups historically underrepresented in data science. The summer program welcomes a cohort of students to the University of Virginia to participate in several weeks of mentored research, technical skills training, and professional development. Hosted by the School of Data Science, the 2023 Data Justice Academy is made possible by support of program sponsors Capital One and Deloitte AI Institute for Government.

Renée Cummings joined the School of Data Science in 2020 as the School’s first Data Activist in Residence and now serves as Associate Professor of the Practice of Data Science. The School of Data Science is currently partnering with the Karsh Institute of Democracy to support a Democracy and Data Fellow. In addition, the School partners closely with the Equity Center and iThriv on community-engaged research and scholarship.
