The UVA Data Science Institute is looking for an undergraduate rising second year or rising third year student with an interest in journalism, and data science and analytics. The position will include writing assigned pieces as well as developing stories independently, and working with graduate and Ph.D. students, administrators, and faculty to discover and share the exciting data science research and academics happening within the institute and across Grounds.

Desirable candidates will be self-directed, intellectually curious, affable, and dependable, with excellent writing and storytelling skills. This position will start at 10 hours/week and $15/hour, with the possibility for more hours depending on needs and performance. This position is eligible for federal work-study.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Produce assigned and independently sourced content for the DSI website, DSI newsletters, University Communications, and external media outlets

  • Source art and graphics for content as needed

  • Copyedit content produced by DSI Communications as needed/time allows

  • Load content to DSI website as needed/time allows

  • A cover letter highlighting your skills and interests

  • A resume

  • Names and contact information for three academic or professional references familiar with your work ethic and writing ability

  • 3 writing samples that demonstrate your ability to research, write and tell compelling, concise stories. These should be original work and can be work published by a media outlet or work submitted for a course.

  • A story pitch based on current DSI research (research project proposals can be found here and here), including a sample one to two sentence lead, potential sources, and ideas for art/graphics.
