The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) is holding a hack-a-thon as part of the NVTC’s Capital Data Summit on February 28, 2018 in McLean, Va. The hack-a-thon is a team competition for students at higher education institutions in and around Virginia.

The topic this year is veteran suicide, and the UVA Data Science Institute hosted a student-interest meeting on January 17 from 5 pm to 7 pm in the Dell 1 Building on Grounds to provide more information and guidance for undergraduate and graduate students interested in forming or joining a team for the competition.

Each institution will be represented by one team of up to five students, of which a maximum of one can be a graduate student, and a faculty mentor.

At the Challenge, the teams will be judged on the basis of how well they are able to explore their data to provide ideas and approaches for addressing issues related to veteran suicide. They will be judged on the basis of: 1) their choice of data, 2) their analytical techniques, 3) their understanding of and insight into the subject matter domain of the questions, and 4) the quality of their presentation.
