Data Science Institute Announces New Director!

Dr. Philip E. Bourne, newly appointed Director of the Data Science Institute

The Data Science Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Philip E. Bourne as its incoming Director. Phil will take his position as the Stephenson Chair of Data Science, Director of the Data Science Institute, and Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering starting May 1, 2017. Phil comes to us from his position as the first Associate Director for Data Science at the National Institutes of Health. NIH Director Dr. Francis S. Collins notes that while at NIH, Phil lead the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) program, an NIH-wide priority initiative to ensure NIH plays a major role in coordinating access to and analysis of many different biomedical research datasets, as well as providing resources for training and software development. Under his leadership, NIH developed the concept of the Commons, a shared virtual space where scientists can find, manage, share, use, and reuse data, software, metadata, and workflows; institutionalized FAIR, a set of guiding principles to make data findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable; and established the NIH Data Science Workforce Development Center to advance data science education.

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that we welcome Phil to the Data Science Institute and the University of Virginia, and we look forward to the next era of the DSI.
